Are Memes Important to the Russian-Ukrainian War?
The importance of social media can hardly be overstated in the struggle of global public opinion that runs parallel to the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian war, with memes, in particular, playing a central role.
This blog post outlines how the Ukrainian government used memes to achieve its goals, the unique advantages of memes as political tools, and the disadvantages when used concerning the current conflict.
How to use Ukrainian Memes
Since starting the war between Russia and Ukraine in 2022, the Ukrainian government has implemented a variety of innovative digital tactics.

Most notably, Ukraine's Digital Transformation Minister has posted an open letter to the CEO of the tech company on her Twitter, urging her to withdraw from the Russian market.
Many such tweets went viral, putting public pressure on global tech companies such as PayPal, Facebook, Google, and Netflix to subsequently cease operations in Russia.
Additionally, Ukrainian officials are using social media to spread memes of Ukrainian President Volodymyr and his Zelensky. This approach has also been enthusiastically embraced by his users on social media, who post hundreds of Zelensky memes daily.
The use of memes is a particularly sophisticated digital tactic as it builds on the sharing culture of social media to spread foreign policy messages to large numbers of individuals.
A trending meme travels faster and farther online than a press release or a well-crafted diplomatic tweet. So far, viral memes have focused on praising Zelensky's courage and refusal to leave Ukraine, and comparing him to other Western leaders.
One claimed that Zelensky went from comedian to inspirational leader while European leaders have become jokes. Other memes compared him to Vladimir Putin, claiming that the former was a "hero" and the latter a "loser".
